Known variously as Mike Batio or MAB, Michael Angelo Batio is one of the most incendiary guitar players to have emerged from the glam rock scene of the late Eighties and early Nineties. Voted the ‘#1 Shredder Of All Time’, by Guitar One magazine, Batio is known for his lightning-paced runs which have seen him garner awards consistently as the fastest guitarist of all time through the course of his explosive career.
The Chicago-born axe grinder’s hypersonic technique is matched only by his flair for showmanship which often finds him playing the quad guitar or a guitar with four necks. It makes for a stunning visual highpoint wherever Batio takes the stage and is the centrepiece of his multi-media show, ‘Hands Without Shadows – A Tribute To Rock Guitar’.
A prodigious talent, Michael Angelo started playing the piano and composing music by the time he was five and picked up the guitar when he turned 10. Some three years later, his guitar instructor stopped giving him lessons famously claiming, “You are faster at 13 than I was at 22”.
Batio’s big break arrived with the glam-metal band Nitro where the video for ‘Freight Train’, one of the charting singles from the band’s debut album, ‘O.F.R’, witnessed the six-gunner wielding the quad-neck. The move was listed by FHM as one of the ’50 Most Outrageous Moments In Rock History’.
The spiral ascent has carried on unabated and MAB arrives in India for a headlining slot at IIT-Guwahati’s annual cultural festival, Alcheringa. Scheduled to play at the fest on February 2, 2014, Michael Angelo’s gig at the IIT campus is guaranteed to have jaws hitting the floor across the arena and is an absolutely fabulous way to kick off this year’s musical agenda.
